Valakkai Thovattal(Raw Banana Thovattal)


Valakkai Thovattal(Raw Banana Thovattal) is one of the most important sidedish in the Grand Lunch served in our Marriage Ceremony and Kerala Royal Sadhya(Grand Lunch served with 23 Sidedishes,Dal,Sambhar,Rasam,etc., and 3 to 5 Payasam etc).

Here I Shared the recipe followed by my mother.

Ingredients:

Raw Banana(Valakkai or Kacha Kela or Plantain)    2 Nos.
Grated Coconut    1/4 Cup.
Garlic    1 Clove.
Turmeric Powder    1/4 Tsp.
Red Chilly Powder    1 Tsp.
Pepper Powder    1/2 Tsp.
Cumin(Jeera)    1 Tsp.
Mustard Seed(Rai)    1 Tsp.
Urud Dal    1 Tsp.
Curry Leaves    1 Tsp.
Coconut Oil    3 Tsp.

Method:
  • Take the Ingredients. Chop the Raw Banana and half boil it with Turmeric Powder and Salt.
     
     
  • In a fry pan, Heat 1 Tsp of oil add Cumin(Jeera) and Garlic to it.
  • Add the Grated Coconut to it.
  • Fry til it becomes golden brown.
  • Turn off the stove and add Red Chilly Powder to it.
  • Fry it well and set asside.
     
     
  • Heat 2 Tsp Oil in a fry pan and season with Mustard Seeds,Urud Dal and Curry Leaves.
  • Add the Half Boiled Raw Banana and fry it well.
  • Now add the Coconut Mixture and fry well until the Raw Banana roast well.
  • Finally add the Pepper Powder and mix well.
  • Our Thovattal is ready.
  • Serve as sidedish for Rice or Dal Rice or Sambhar Rice.
