Cucumber Kootu Curry (Cucumber Dal)


Kootu Curry is one of our traditional dish which is made up of dal,any one of the vegetable like cucumber/snakeguard/bottleguard and coconut paste. Here I made this recipe using cucumber and this dish is a simple and best combination for rice.

Recipe Overview:

In this Post I share the recipe Cucumber Koothu Curry(Cucumber Dal). First we roast the moong dal well.Then pressure cook moong dal,cucumber cubes,asafoetida(hing) and salt for 1 whistle. Grind grated coconut,cumin(jeera),garlic,turmeric powder,red chily powder into a fine paste. Add the paste into the dal,mix and boil for 2 minutes.Now our curry is ready. In a tadka pan,season with mustard,urud dal(black lentils),dry red chilly and curry leaves in ghee. Pour this seasoning on the curry. Now enjoy our Cucumber Kootu Curry is served with hot rice.

Ingredients:

Mangalore Cucumber(Cubed) 250 gms.
Moong Dal 1/3 Cup.
Grated Coconut 1/2 Cup.
Turmeric Powder 1/4 tsp.
Red Chilly Powder 1 tsp.
Garlic 1 clove.
CuminsSeeds(Jeera) 1 tsp.
Asafoetida(Hing) 1/8 tsp.
Water as required.
Salt to taste.
For Seasoning/Tempering:
Mustard Seeds 1 tsp.
Urud dal(Black Lentils) 1 tsp.
Dry Red Chilly 1 number.
Curry Leaves few.
Ghee 2 tsp.

Step By Step Instructions:
  • Roast moong dal well.
  • Pressure cook moong dal,cucumber cubes,asafoetida and salt for 1 whistle.
  • Grind grated coconut,cumin(jeera),garlic,turmeric powder,red chilly powder into a fine paste.
  • Add the paste to the cooked dal.
  • Mix well and boil it for 2 minutes.
  • Transfer it into a serving bowl.
  • In a tadka pan, add ghee,mustard seeds, urud dal, dry red chilly and season it. Add curry leaves to it.
  • Pour the tadka on the curry.
  • Now our Cucumber Kootu Curry is ready.
  • Serve with hot rice.

Take 1/3 cup of moong dal in a fry pan.


Roast it well till aroma came out.


Cut the cucumber into cubes.


Add moong dal,cucumber,asafoetida,salt in a pressure cooker.


Add water and pressure cook for 1 whistle.


Add grated coconut,cumin(jeera),garlic clove,turmeric powder,red chilly powder in a mixie jar.


Grind it into a fine paste as shown below.


After pressure completely released,open the pressure cooker and turn on the stove.


Add the grinded paste into it.


Mix and boil for 2 minutes.


Transfer the curry into the serving bowl.


In a tadka pan,add ghee and season with mustard seeds,urud dal,dry red chilly,and curry leaves.


Pour the seasoning on the curry. Now our Cucumber Kootu Curry is ready.Serve with hot rice
